Rafael van der Vaart’s move to Hamburg SV.

Rafael van der Vaart moved to Hamburg SV on July 1st 2005. He was positioned as playmaker, and during the first season in Germany he began developing the form he used to herald in Ajax. Van der Vaart finished the first season as Hamburg’s topscorer, and he was praised for his performance.
He really showed most of the football world that they were wrong in saying that it was a step back for him to leave for Hamburg SV.

Van der Vaart’s second season in Hamburg.

In the second season, van der Vaart was appointed as team captain. He was once again injured and the team was not doing well in his absence, they only won one game before the winter break.
After the winter break van der Vaart was back, and he had an immediate impact on the team, especially in the UEFA Champions League, where he scored goals in three games. In the League in Germany van der Vaart led the team to victories and out of relegation zone and Hamburg finished seventh in the League.

This Season and van der Vaart.

Van der Vaart has been in great shape this season for Hamburg, currently leading them to fifth place in the German Bundesliga thanks to all his goals. Van der Vaart had also a significant roll in Hamburg’s success in UEFA Cup this season where they reached the Round of 16.
